MACROALGAE CARE

MACROALGAE CARE

Just like freshwater aquarium plants, saltwater macroalgae requires light, nutrients and the correct environmental conditions to flourish. Many people assume that macroalgae can be put into their aquarium display, refugium or sump and it will grow indefinitely without further care. This could not be a more incorrect assumption, as many macroalgae will quickly die off if their needs aren't met.

Macroalgae require lighting to photosynthesise and grow, just like all true plants do.  Due to the large variation in the depths and areas of the oceans in which macroalgae naturally grow, not all lighting is suitable for growing macroalgae effectively THIS GUIDE will explain everything you need to know about correct macroalgae lighting.

To grow macroalgae needs food, in most cases the same sorts of nutrients that all plants need. These nutrients are both macro and micro nutrients, of which some are abundant in the reef tank, whereas others are more limited. Dosing nutrients to prevent macroalgae starving is almost always needed at some point. THIS GUIDE explains why and what nutrients are required and how to dose them.

Macroalgae tanks and sometimes even the macroalgae itself will sometimes need help to stay clean. Most of the time the animals we put into out tanks to keep them clean will be similar to a normal reef tank, however some of these will eat good macroalgae as well as the undesirable species. THIS GUIDE will show you which species are safe for macroalgae tanks for clean up crew.
